I had a photography mentor session the other day with a student. We talked about light and posing, styling and finding emotion in each frame we take.
Because this thing we do is emotional.
It’s not just *snap-snap* there’s a picture of a girl. It’s so much more than that.
It’s that girl, a college student, a young adult, who I use to battle with on the track everyday as a coach. It’s seeing the changes, finding the familiar parts and loving all of it.
So much growth.
Now that picture of a girl is a PORTRAIT of a girl. Of Hannah, at age 18. And that’s what’s important.
That’s what I teach.
Photographing and EXPERIENCING the person or the people in front of you. Because it *is* an experience, knowing people.
Glad to know you, Hannah. And thanks for letting me teach you, Matteo.
Here are a few digital frames from that session + some BTS iPhone shots.
Behind the scenes of the mentoring session:
Teaching Matteo to use the open shade, direct sunlight, and to anticipate those glorious gusts of wind I wish I could bottle and release on command! ;)
